Nobody recognizes a wealth-transfer era while they're inside one.
They recognize it after. Once the winners are obvious, the companies are established, the documentaries come out. Then everybody acts like it was inevitable.
But during the actual moment? It never feels inevitable. It feels noisy and embarrassing and overhyped, like something you'd be a little ashamed to admit you were doing.
That's where we are with AI right now.
We've been here before
If you're a millennial, you've already watched this happen twice.
The dot-com boom created people who understood the internet before everybody else did. Not geniuses, not better people, just people who recognized that behavior was changing before the rest of society caught up.
Then social media happened. People laughed at influencers, laughed at YouTubers, laughed at people building audiences for a living.
Now entire economies exist because some people understood attention before traditional industries did.
The people who looked unserious at first eventually became the infrastructure.
This is the part that keeps repeating. Before something gets respected, it goes through a phase where it looks ridiculous. And the people who show up during that phase, before the proof arrives, before the case studies, before it becomes a LinkedIn skill, those people almost always come out on the other side holding something that took everyone else twice as long to build.
Technology changes leverage
That's it.
The internet lowered distribution costs, social media lowered the cost of building an audience, and AI is doing the same thing to execution. One person can now do what previously required entire teams. That doesn't erase talent. It amplifies whoever shows up with it.
The calculator didn't eliminate mathematicians, cameras didn't eliminate artists, and the internet didn't eliminate businesses. The people who adapted expanded. The ones who resisted became nostalgic.
Right now there are millions of people spending more time debating AI philosophically than learning how to use it practically. That's probably a mistake. Not a moral one. Just a timing one.
The window
Every shift like this creates a temporary moment where the rules loosen. Where a curious person with no credentials can catch up to institutions that previously had every advantage.
That window doesn't stay open. The internet became crowded, social media became saturated, and AI will too.
But right now we're still early enough that experimentation matters more than credentials. A designer with AI, a writer with AI, a solo founder with AI. That combination is starting to look dangerously effective.
Years from now people will look back at this the same way they look back at buying domains in the 90s or posting consistently on YouTube in 2008.
Damn. It was right there.
The people who miss it won't miss it because they lacked access. They'll miss it because they waited to feel ready.
And ready is just another word for late.
